U.S. Healthcare: What's Broken & How to Fix It

Symposia Series
HIP and ACTSI sponsor a series of quarterly symposia with panel discussions and Interest Group meetings focused on Healthcare Innovation. The inaugural symposium held on February 1, 2012, featured Steven Lipstein, President & CEO, BJC Healthcare. Click here to view slides and presentations.

Seed Grants: Awards Announced

Seed Grant Program
The Healthcare Innovation Seed Grant program funds multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary teams examining healthcare services and clinical effectiveness. The awards support innovative approaches that address issues of healthcare quality, costs, and/or access. The second round of seed grants awarded this spring were sponsored by HIP, ACTSI and CHOA. The award recipients are:

Sandra B. Dunbar RN, Associate Dean for Academic Advancement, Emory University, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, leads a team of faculty and staff from Georgia Tech, Emory School of Medicine and the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. Arun Mohan MD, MBA, Instructor & Associate Vice Chair for Information Technology, Department of Medicine, Emory School of Medicine leads a team of faculty and staff from Georgia Tech and Emory School of Medicine. Student Events & Activities

Student Networking Night
HIP and ACTSI sponsored the first Student Networking Night on Monday, April 16. More than a dozen healthcare professionals from the community participated to discuss non-provider health-related professions with students from across Emory. For information on the participants click here. Topics included Healthcare Informatics, Healthcare Law & Marketing, Healthcare Consulting, Health Plans & HR, Healthcare Technology, Healthcare Operations & Planning and Healthcare Financial Management. The next student networking night is planned for Fall 2012.

Innovation Highlights: People
Edmund Becker, PhD - PCORI Award
Edmund Becker PhD, Professor of Health Policy and Management, Emory University, Rollins School of Public Health, was awarded a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) grant to link patient satisfaction data with outcomes data and hospital structure and implementation status data for hospital discharges across 14 states in 2009 and 2010. He is partnered with researchers from University of Illinois, Emory, Stanford, Perdue and Brown Universities. Click here for more information on the proposal.

Tim Buchman PhD, MD - CMS Innovation Grant
Tim Buchman PhD, MD, Professor of Surgery and Director of Emory Center for Critical Care, leads a team receiving $10.7 million in funding from the CMS Innovation Center. The project is a collaboration that trains health professionals and uses tele-health technology to link critical care units in rural Georgia to critical care doctors in Atlanta hospitals. The project aims to save money and improve the quality of care by reducing the need to transfer patients from rural hospitals to critical care units in Atlanta. Click here to read more.
